A Review of 60 Cases of Intussusception


Abstract
This report of 60 casee includes the Surgical observation and experiences of intussusception treated in Woo Sok hospital of Korea Medical college from April, 1969. to Octover, 1973.
1) In age distribution, 44 case (74%) were under one year of age, with the peak incidence of the 6 to 12 months of age, 87% of the patients were under age of 15, and male showed a higher incidence than female with ratio of 2 to 1.
2) of 60 cases of intussusception, only in 5 cases were the causes identified, namely ilex-cecal band (1), mesenteric lymphadenopathy (1), sarcoma of cecum (1)
3) The cardinal symptoms and signs were colicky abdominal pain in 75%, Vomiting in 77%, bloody stool in 72%, abdominal distention in 40% and palpable abdominal- mass in 58%.
4) Types of the intussusception were ileo-cecal in 76%, ileo ileo-colic in 9%, colo-colonic in 9%, and ileo-ceco-colic in 6%,
5) Of 60 cases treated, 29 were treated with manual reduction, 2 with primary resection and anastomosis and 3 with right hemicolectomy. The Rest of the cases, 26 were succesfully corrected with barium enema (Hydrostatic pressure reduction). four cases had history of prevous intussusception Successfully treated by barium enema.
6) Surgical mortality in 60 cases of intussusception was 3.3%- (two Gases).
